The cylinder is an important part of a lock set, Its function is substantially that of receiving the key and, if this is the correct one, transferring the rotational movement of the key to the mechanism of the lock body, to turn the deadbolt to lock the door. Find out information about the Euro standard on cylinders below.
The recognised Euro standards exist for cylinders which is considered as a “against snapping cylinder” is kitemark TS 007. TS 007 was developed by DHF (Door & Hardware Federation) and GGF (the Glass & Glazing Federation) and has the support of BSI and Secured by Design. To provide protection to the TS007 standard, the cylinder needs to withstand 5 types of attack (picking, drilling, bumping, snapping and plug extraction). Cylinder and hardware solutions that have successfully met the requirements of the standard will be marked in accordance with a star rating scheme, with a cumulative total of three stars being necessary to provide complete security.
•
1-star rating: cylinders which have passed the criteria for the British Kitemark so should resist drilling, picking and bumping; however, they have NOT passed snapping tests.
•
2-star rating: rated to a PAS24 rating on door handles and door furniture (e.g. security escutcheons) with the ability of against cylinder snapping. The 2-star level door handles must be accompanied by 1-star cylinder to meet an overall TS007 3-star rating.
•
3-star rating: the 3-star rating cylinders are those which have passed all TS007 tests, including lock snapping tests and prove to withstand 5 types of attack. It can be an independent 3-star rating of the cylinder, or a combination of the 1-star ranking cylinder and 2-star rating handle.
• In addition, there is
A 3-star Sold Secure Diamond rating, which means a cylinder has been tested above and beyond the usual standards required for TS007, and has also been tested by MLA - the Master Locksmiths Association. Therefore, it guarantees the highest level of security against cracking.
The rankings are marked by the symbol on the product’s surface. The testing will be carried out independently by a third party - BSI (The British Standards Institution) to ensure that the product has been independently and rigorously tested.
