Brass is an alloy made primarily of copper and zinc. The proportions of the copper and zinc are varied to yield many kinds of brass. Basic modern brass is 67% copper and 33% zinc. However, the amount of copper may range from 55% to 95% by weight, with the amount of zinc varying from 5% to 45%.

The alloy has a relatively low melting point, a good conductor of heat and is easy to cast. Brass has low-friction and resists corrosion, including galvanic corrosion from saltwater. It can be readily soldered and brazed, and many can be welded by gas, arc and resistance methods. They can be polished and buffed to almost any desired texture and luster.

●    Common uses for brass: Brass is most widely used in applications that are decorative and mechanical.
